ABOUT THE SHOW

“This year’s Mardi Gras festival gets off to an amiable start with the gay sex comedy [Hardcore] … Smart, message-free, solidly amusing” – Sydney Morning Herald

Hardcore is a funny, honest and eye-opening look at what leads the participants of pornography to commit the most intimate of acts to film.

Four hot young guys are trying hard to forge careers in the bizarre and quirky world of gay porn. For Robert, facing an aging crisis at 25, being in a porn film is an adventure, rather like paragliding – something to be ticked off the ‘to do before you die’ list. To straight guy Kevin, a struggling but dedicated actor, it’s just another job … and a way of showing his dramatic versatility! Martin sees it as a bit of fun with sex as a bonus. It’s left to Craig, veteran of two previous films (and winner of a ‘Stiffy’ award for Most Promising Newcomer), to dispel their illusions about the raunch and the glamour, and to prepare the guys for the huge gulf between the watching and making of pornography. Nothing, however, can prepare them for real feelings and a confrontation with the past.

Please note: this production contains nudity, drug use, strong language and adult themes and is recommended for persons aged 18+

The Boys in the Band by Mart Crowley

A SPECIAL STAGED READING
Since the late 1980s, New Theatre has developed a reputation for producing theatre that addresses gay and lesbian issues. Our first official production with the Mardi Gras Festival was in 1994 with Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band, directed by Kevin Jackson, celebrating the 25th Anniversary of this play.

The Boys in the Band is considered to be a groundbreaking work in American theatre, the first truly honest portrayal of the lives of contemporary homosexuals, premiering in New York in 1968. Kevin Jackson revisits this ground-breaking expose of gay men behaving very badly: a bitchy and scathingly funny play in the tradition of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and All About Eve.
